I had the hot amazake, onigiri set, and amazake ice cream. Everything was good. The hot amazake in particular stood out. The prices were quite reasonable, too.

This is an ideal place if you want to enjoy some traditional Japanese sweets. It's not very touristy but if you ask for English menu, they will give one to you. There is a small but beautiful garden inside. The only thing u have to be careful with is that they don't accept credit cards, cash only.

This was one of my favorite meals in Japan. This restaurant specializes in miso and amazake. I had the organic miso lunch set, chai amazake, and sundae. The lunch set came with fish, small side dishes, and rice pudding. The sundae came with matcha ice cream, red beans, and fruit. Everything was delicious and I would love to go back for more. It's a great stop between the north and south temple walks. They have an English menu with pictures. The setting is pretty and peaceful and they also sell miso at the front.

Absolutely — here’s the final version with all those tasty details included: --- We stumbled across Kojiya Café in Kyoto and were completely blown away. The space is calm, clean, and homely — beautifully presented without being fussy or overdone. It’s clear the café is all about eating well and feeling good, in a way that’s both comforting and intentional. The menu is rooted in clean, conscious eating, with a spotlight on traditional fermented foods like miso and *koji* (fermented rice). Koji is the base for many Japanese ferments, rich in enzymes that support digestion and overall gut health. One of the byproducts of fermenting rice with koji is *amazake* — a naturally sweet, non-alcoholic drink full of nutrients. We tried the hot amazake with ginger — amazing on a cool day — and the chocolate version was a huge hit with the kids. The food was equally memorable: the miso soup set was comforting and absolutely heavenly, the cheese toast was superb, another big hit with the kids, and the curry cheese gratin was rich, and incredibly satisfying. Everything here is well made, unpretentious, and thoughtfully presented. We were especially impressed by the range of fermented and pickled items, many of which were new to us — and so good we ended up bringing some home. The café also offers tools and kits if you want to try making your own miso at home. A warm, nourishing meal in a peaceful setting, A hidden gem in Kyoto.
